Nong khai : North East Thailand

Filed under:

Nong khai

Nong Khai is located on the banks of the Mae Khong River and the close to the Friendship bridge that links Thailand with Laos. A small and pleasant town offering a taste of life in the North East. This is a good base from which to explore Isaan, the North-East of Thailand, and the only place at which you can cross the river into neighbouring Laos by using the so-called frienship bridge. The scenery around Nong Khai and along the Maekhong river is very beautiful and worth to check it out. Outside of Nong Khai is Wat Khaek, a Buddhist-Hindu temple worth a visit. The city is also a good place to buy handicraft of the region and neighbouring Laos. The completion of the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge in 1994 put Nong Khai on the map, so to speak, and has increased the number of visitors to the area. Despite these changes, however, the town still remains extremely quaint and the people are as friendly as people can get.
