Langkawi Travel Guide

Langkawi…one of Malaysia’s most popular tropical island destinations….Mystical legends, majestic jungle covered hills, sun-kissed beaches, superb resorts and a relaxing easy pace…

As a natural paradise, the islands are perhaps unmatched anywhere else in Southeast Asia. With a geological history dating back 500 million odd years, the islands contain unique rock formations that stir the imagination and baffle the mind. Numerous caves, with their stunning stalactites and stalagmites, taunt the adventurous to unravel their ancient secrets. Fine beaches offer sun-filled days of complete relaxation. Langkawi also hosts a number of international events including the Tour de Langkawi, an annual cycling competition starting in Langkawi and ending in Kuala Lumpur; The Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Show (LIMA) and the annual Royal Langkawi Regatta which draws boats from all over the world.

The best known legend is of Mashuri, a pretty maiden who lived some 200 years ago. Executed for a crime she did not commit, she laid a curse on the land, that “…Langkawi shall not prosper for seven generations to come.”

Seven generations of barren underdevelopment have passed. As the cloud of both social and economic gloom passes, Langkawi is poised to take its place as a premier holiday venue. Populated by approximately 60,000 inhabitants, mostly Malays, it offers myriad possibilities for both the weary and the adventurous and is nothing short of a “must” for the avid and fun-loving traveller.
