Batu Pahat is the name of a town and district in the western part of the state of Johor, Malaysia. It lies south of Muar, north-west of Kluang and west of Segamat. The name means ‘chiselled rock’ in Malay. Batu Pahat town was formerly known as Bandar Penggaram. The town has a population of about 140,000 while the district has a population exceeding 300,000.
