The volcanic Mount Papandayan in Garut district, West Java, has been erupting continuously for the past week, prompting thousands of villagers to flee their homes. he highest part of the crater floor lies to the southeast. It is ~6600 feet (2000 m) high and sits ~800 feet (240 m) below the crater rim. The floor of this crater contains sulfurous pools of standing water, fumaroles, solfataras, mud volcanoes and hot springs. Java is almost entirely of volcanic origin, and contains no less than thirty-eight mountains of that conical form which indicates their having at one time or other been active volcanoes. Only a few of them, however, have been in activity in more recent times.
