Known as the Land of Dharma, Amnat Charoen is famous For its scenic view especially where the Khong River forms the borderline. Amnat Charoen is located in Southern I-San plateau, approximately 583 kilometres from Bangkok. The town was founded during the reign of King Rama III, established under the jurisdiction of Nakhon Khemarat and later governed by Ubon Ratchathani Province.

Originally called ‘Nakhon Roi Prang’ (Hundred Prang City), the province boasts of having the most Khmer stone sanctuaries, most of which are concentrated in the southern part, with magnificent Phanom Rung Stone Sanctuary being a popular tourist attraction and the most beautiful example of Khmer architecture in Thailand. And no wonder, since this province bordering present day Cambodia was once a prosperous Khmer city. The modern name of Buri Ram means ‘city of peace’. It is one of the largest and most populated provinces in Isan (the northeastern region).

Buri Ram is 410 kilometres from Bangkok. It has an area of 10,321 square kilometres. Of particular important is Phanom Rung Historical Park, a-thousand-year-old site and one of the most important Khmer sites outside Cambodia. Situated about 120 kilometres from Korat city, Phanom Rung has been brought back to its full glory after nearly two decades of restoration. The result is extremely impressive.

Chaiyaphum : North East Thailand

Chaiyaphum is located almost at the center of Thailand about 342 kilometers from Bangkok and it is easily reached by road. Chaiyaphum has an abundance of natural attractions and is famous for its beautiful flower fields, particularly the Krachiao Flower Blooming Festival during the months of June-July. Chaiyaphum’s size, with majority of it being forests and mountains, ranks third in the region and eighth in the country. Chaiyaphum is divided into 2 parts by the mountain range that runs through the center of the province form east to west which comprises Phu Yuak, Phu E Thao, Phu Lankha, Phu Phang Hoei and connects with Phu Phraya Fo which is part of the Petchabun Mountain Range. The town was founded by a group of Vientiane immigrants, led by Nai Lae, a nobleman, during the beginning of the Rattanakosin era over 2 centuries ago. Within a decade, King Rama III promoted Nai Lae to Phraya Phakdi Chumphon and made him the city’s first lord.

Kalasin was once relegated to the status of an Amphoe before being restored its present administrative entity. Despite its smallness Kakasin is a busy agricultural province with considerable attractions Kalasin is 519 kilometers from Bangkok. It is the site of the ancient city of Fa Daet Song Yang and one of the largest concentrations of dinosaur fossils in northeastern Thailand.

Khon Kaen : North East Thailand

hailand. Khon Kaen is the commerce and political center of Northeastern Thailand, and is well known for the silk that is manufactured in the area. Khon Kaen is the home of tennis sensation Khun Paradorn Srichaphan. The digs have also unearthed evidence of the province’s pre-history with the highest number of dinosaur fossils found in Thailand in this area. These days Khon Kaen is also famous for being the home of tennis star Paradorn Srichaphan and Thailand’s 1996 Olympic Gold Medal winning boxer, Somluck Kamsing. Both Laos and Vietnam have consulates in Khon Kaen city where visa applications are processed, and the city also boasts the largest university in ‘Isaan’ - Khon Kaen University.

Loei is one of the prime tourist destinations in the region. Apart from its natural beauty, Loei also offers a scene of local tradition that is still intact. Loei has many things in common with the Northern region with numerous high hills and mountains, wintry and foggy climate. Loei is also a place rich in history, and the cultural influences of long-lost civilizations are readily evident. In no area are these influences more obvious than in the architecture of the region, and Loei offers several good examples of this cultural influence, including dozens of temples, Buddha images and other charming works of art.

The mountains, mainly West of Loei, around Nahaew, Phu Rua, Dansai and Tali districts. The population here is sparse because of the small areas for cultivation and because the terrain makes communication inconvenient. Loei is 520 kilometres from Bangkok. It has an area of about 11,426 square kilometres and is divided into the following districts: Muang, Wang Saphung, Phu Kradueng, Chiang Khan, Pak Chom, Tha Li, Phu Ruea, Dan Sai, Na Haeo, Na Duang, Phu Luang, Pha Khao, Erawan and Nong Hin.

Maha Sarakham : North East Thailand

Located in the middle of the Northeast region, Maha Sarakham is 475 kilometers from Bangkok. Sarakham is considered to be a regional education centre, earning the name “Taksila of Isan” (Taksila was a city where education of all branches centered around in ancient India). The province also houses a sacred Buddha image and has many historical sites, with the province being the former site of the ancient Dvaravati city of Nakhon Champa Si. Maha Sarakham’s beautiful hand woven silk and cotton fabrics are sought after for their original patterns. The principal occupations of Maha Sarakham people are cultivation and animal raising. Outstanding home industry of Maha Sarakham is sericulture and silk fabric production. Maha Sarakham hand woven silk and cotton mainly have original patterns and are very beautiful. From here travellers can follow Highway 213 south-east to Roi Et and Yasothon, staying in the Chi River valley that eventually jons the Mun River in Ubon Ratchathani, a key destination of the lower Isan region. Or at Yasothon they turn north-east towards Mukdahan on the banks of the Mekong River

Mukdahan is a peaceful province located on the bank of the Mekong River, opposite Sawannakhet in Laos. Standing on the river bank near the Indochinese market in front of the city of Mukdahan, one can imagine how far this river travels. Mukdahan has a saying “Beautiful city on the Mekong’s bank, sweet tamarind, origin of Phaya River, splendid mountains, valuable ancient drums, eight-tribe cultures, picturesque Manorom Mount, and beautiful Kra Bao lslet". Currently it is one of four official border checkpoints to Laos with a bustling cross-river trade using ferries. Mukdahan, formerly a district in Nakhon Phanom, became a province in 1980. Mukdahan comprises 7 districts and has eight tribes of Thai people, each of which has its distinct tradition and culture. These eight tribes are Phu T’ai, Yu, Kha, Soe, Kar Lerng, Saek, Kula, and Thai-Lao.

Nakhon phanom : North East Thailand

Best known for its panoramic views of the Mekong River and the rugged mountains of Laos, it also has religious heritage centering on the province’s Phra That Phanom, the most sacred religious structure in the Northeast. Nakhon Phanom is 740 km from Bangkok, 242 km from Udon Thani and 296 km from Nong Khai. Nakhon Phanom (City of Mountains), although primarily a gateway to Laos and onwards to Vietnam, is also home to one of Isan’s (and southern Laos’) most important wats, Phra That Phanom in the southern town of That Phanom. The province, literally translated as “city of hills”, is renowned for its beautiful scenery and a great place to spend a few relaxing days by the Mekong River. The city contains one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites, revered in both Thailand and neighboring Laos. The province is opposite Tha Khaek in Laos.

Nakhon Ratchasima has a wide variety of local goods that tourists can buy from city markets or production centres. Famous handicrafts are Dan Kwian earthenware, silk and Mat Mi silk from Pak Thong Chai. Products of housewives can be bought from the Khorat Goods Centre near the provincial hall.

Food products include sausages, fermented sausages, Chinese sausages, minced pork that is found everywhere in the city and in Pak Chong, and Khorat noodles that are sold everywhere. The largest fruit market is Klang Dong Market, before going up Khao Yai. This is where produce from Nakhon Ratchasima and nearby provinces is sold. The most famous fruit of Klang Dong is custard apple that is sold all year round.
