Chiang mai : North Thailand

Filed under:

Chiang mai

Chiang Mai is Thailand’s second largest city, but in terms of quality of living, tourist attractions and development potential, it’s second to none in Southeast-Asia. The city is famous for her friendly people, beautiful women, refined handicrafts, cool climate and stunning mountain scenery. The city is located in a valley on the banks of the river Ping. West of the city is the holy hill of Doi Suthep that is crowned with the temple Wat Prathat. More than three-hundred temples, among them some of the most beautiful and revered in the entire Buddhist world, give the city an atmosphere of calmness and timeless elegance.

If you arrive by plane one of the first things you see after the plane has landed is the high green hill to the left of the runway with the sparkling golden temple roofs. The city is surrounded by hills and mountains that are lower extremities of the foothills of the Himalaya. The mountains are covered with vast teak forests, where elephants are still working in the woodcutter camps (although more and more of them are being replaced by modern machinery). Chiang Mai was a quiet and peaceful place until the late 1960s, when the first industrial plants were built and many of the pretty old teakwood houses were replaced by modern concrete buildings and skyscrapers.

Lamphun

Lamphun often plays poor step-sister to Chiang Mai, just 26 kilometers away. Even though its older than Chiang Mai by about 500 years and is the capital of its own province, the town is generally only visited as a day trip from Chiang Mai. It is a small town, with some significant sights, but there really isn’t much here to occupy you for more than a day. Today, Lamphun still retain its enchanting ambience of a small but old community. It is some 670 kilometers from Bangkok and only 26 kilometers from Chiang Mai. Located on the bank of the Kuang River, its attractions include ancient sites and relics as well as forests and mountains and delightful lakes. Lamphun is the most famous producer of longans. Today the province is rather calmer, and although it may be a tempting place to relax for a few days outside Chiang Mai, the lack of decent hotels makes it a better day-trip destination.
